what is the right feeling after acupuncture treatment?

by admin on October 10, 2009

I went under acupuncture treatment for about 3 months for enlarged ovaries. Lately the treatment became really bloody, the needles cause big bumps and bruises on the legs around knee area. I feel some discomfort when I walk after the treatment. When I asked my physician, she told me that bleeding is good for my recovery. Is this right? I thought acupuncture should increase blood circulation, with a needle in the middle of the vein, it could cause blood clot in the vein.

I know nothing about traditional Chinese medicine nor western medicine. Could someone help me?

An occasional bruise, or lump, can occur with acupuncture. In my own clinical experience and that of my colleague’s, it does not usually happen repeatedly though.

Unless you have a bleeding/clotting disorder, or are taking a blood thinner, it shouldn’t really be happening every time.

It’s also not uncommon to be aware of where the needles were at for a few hours after the treatment is finished. However, the sensation should be very mild.

Without being an expert on the subject, I can’t say for sure if bleeding and discomfort are normal for your specific case. Most people do not report such symptoms, though, and the needles are intended to be fairly noninvasive. The best advice I can give is to get a second opinion, and try and find a leading acupuncture specialist in your area that would be willing to consult with you. It may even be free!

There are times during acupuncture treatments that you will experience small amounts of bleeding at a needle sight upon removal of the needle and certainly little or no discomfort thereafter. There is a sense of euphoria and well-being after the treatments. Long story shortened, you should try another acupuncturist, since everyone has a different touch. Good luck!
